Florence: Renaissance Art and Walkable Beauty
A compact Italian city filled with art, architecture, and unforgettable food.
Florence is one of the easiest cities in Europe to navigate. From Florence Airport (FLR), I took the tram into the city — simple and efficient. The city centre is compact, and most major sights are within walking distance: Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore) Uffizi Gallery Ponte Vecchio Climbing the Duomo is worth it — the view over Florence’s terracotta rooftops is unforgettable. Spend a few minutes reading about the history of Florence and Italy, when every City was basically its own kingdom, and the many battles that occurred before it became a single country. One of my favourite experiences was simply walking across the Arno River into the Oltrarno district, which feels more local and less crowded. The leather market is a great place to find some goods for yourself and for gifts. Food is a highlight. I had one of the best meals of my trip at Trattoria Mario, known for its steak (bistecca alla fiorentina). On one trip I stayed near the train station, and another in a B&B overlooking the Arno. Heat in the middle of the summer is factor so stay hydrated and that Grappa, the local schnaps does not count. A great day trip is to Pisa or Siena, both accessible by train. What I’d do differently: Book museum tickets in advance — lines can be long.
