Venice: How to Enjoy It Beyond the Crowds
A realistic guide to experiencing Venice while avoiding peak congestion.
Venice is one of the most unique cities in the world — but also one of the most crowded. Arriving via Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), I took a water bus (vaporetto) into the city — slower than a taxi but far cheaper and more scenic. I have also driven in several times from Southern Austria The key to Venice is timing. Early mornings and evenings are magical. I explored: St. Mark’s Square Doge’s Palace Smaller canals away from main routes The best experiences came from getting lost — walking away from crowds into quiet neighborhoods like Dorsoduro. Food can be hit or miss. Avoid restaurants directly in tourist squares. I had a great meal in a small local trattoria in Dorsoduro. A ride on a gondola is tempting, but it also puts a big whole in the wallet. What I’d do differently: Stay overnight everytime— Venice empties out in the evening.
