Edinburgh First Visit: History, Views, and Walkable Magic
A complete first-time guide to Edinburgh including Old Town, Arthur’s Seat, whisky, and day trips.
Flying into Edinburgh Airport (EDI), I took the Airlink 100 bus, which runs every 10 minutes and gets you to Waverley Bridge in about 30 minutes. It’s cheap and efficient. Taxis cost more but are worth it if you’re staying on the hills of the Old Town, where luggage becomes a challenge. I stayed just off the Royal Mile, which is ideal for a first visit. You’re within walking distance of almost everything, but still slightly removed from the heaviest foot traffic. The Royal Mile itself is busy but worth walking end-to-end — from Edinburgh Castle down to Holyrood Palace. The castle is a must, but go early. It’s less about the exhibits and more about the views over the city. One of the best experiences was climbing Arthur’s Seat. It’s about a 45-minute walk up, and the panoramic view over Edinburgh is easily one of the best city viewpoints in Europe. Go in the late afternoon — the light is better and crowds thin out. I spent time exploring: Victoria Street (arguably the most photographed street in Edinburgh) Grassmarket (great pubs and atmosphere) University of Edinburgh area for a more local feel For food, I had a memorable meal at The Witchery by the Castle — more expensive, but a unique setting. For something casual, traditional pubs serving haggis, neeps, and tatties are everywhere. A great day trip is to St. Andrews (about 1.5 hours by car or bus), especially if you’re interested in golf. For Outlander fans, rent a car for the day, or one of many coaches that take you in a circle of many nearby filming sites. I have done three trips to Scotland, revisit some of my favoriate filming locations and manage to find new ones, and more stone circles to touch. My heritage now seems to be merged with that of Outlander’s cast. What I’d do differently: I’d spend more time in the New Town — I initially focused too much on Old Town. In the summer I was able to catch the internationally renown Busker’s Festival, but of course many places get booked up early for that.
