FlightBuddy destination brief

Rome, Italy

Rome rewards a trip with structure. Let the Colosseum and Forum carry one day, the Vatican another, and give neighborhoods like Trastevere or Centro Storico space to define the evenings. The city improves quickly once you stop treating it like a checklist of ruins and start letting it unfold between them.

Editorial introduction

Rome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t expect to see all of its wonders in 24 hours either. In the middle of the summer heat, slow down your pace to accommodate the heat and crowds. The first time I visited the City was in a mini van the family had rented for a 30-day tour of Europe. I have been back several times since, and it is best to pick a doable selection of sites, to let you have time to rest in a great restaurant for an evening dinner and time to taste the wine, and their Grappa, a schnaps type liquor. On the last visit we rented an apartment for the week and took the subway around to show our children the Coliseum, inside and out, and the ruins that spread out from there. It's amazing to see the Forum site where chariot races occurred, identical to the structures still standing in downtown Istanbul, Turkey which we saw last year. A separate day was then spent touring the Vatican museum, the Vatican and the walking grounds around them. There is so much history in those buildings and artifact collections. Take some time to learn about the history of the cities in Italy that were their own kingdoms, and the role that the Vatican took in consolidating them. Understand the extent of the Roman Empire across the world and when it split in too. That’s what is found in Turkey too, the change of cultures as the empires ebbed and flowed. St Peters was of course a must walk through as well. The next day, we took our kids to see the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and Pantheon. While I have toured Europe on bicycles before, I chose to park the bikes in Switzerland to avoid the road congestion and heat in Italy’s cities such as Rome. If you have an extra day, have a driver take you to the countryside.

Vibe: Historic, chaotic, atmospheric, and deeply textured—Rome feels like an open-air museum layered with real city life.

Best for: Best for history lovers, food-focused travelers, couples, and visitors who want a walkable city where every street adds context.

FlightBuddy take

FlightBuddy take: Rome is at its best when each day has one historical anchor, one neighborhood, and one long meal. If you try to do more than that, you usually enjoy less.

Planning snapshot

Cluster your days geographically: ancient Rome one day, Vatican another, Centro Storico another. Avoid crossing the city repeatedly just to stack famous sights together. Plan major ticketed attractions early in the day, keep afternoons flexible, and let evenings belong to neighborhoods like Trastevere. Rome improves significantly when you leave room for walking and eating instead of scheduling every hour.
