Zurich: Clean, Efficient, and Surprisingly Scenic
A refined Swiss city with lake views, historic streets, and one of Europe’s best transit systems.
Arriving at Zurich Airport (ZRH), I took a direct train to Zurich HB (main station) — about 10 minutes, incredibly efficient, and a perfect introduction to Swiss precision. Taxis are available but unnecessary given how seamless the rail system is. I stayed near the Old Town (Altstadt), which sits along the Limmat River. It’s the best base for a first visit — compact, walkable, and full of character. Walking along Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s most expensive shopping streets, gives you a sense of Zurich’s financial importance. But just a few blocks away, the atmosphere shifts completely to historic alleys and riverside cafés. I spent time exploring: Grossmünster Church (great views if you climb the tower) Fraumünster (known for Chagall windows) The lakefront promenade along Lake Zurich One of the highlights was simply sitting by the lake — watching locals swim, relax, and treat the space as part of daily life. Food is expensive but excellent. I had traditional Swiss rösti at a small restaurant in the Old Town — simple and satisfying. What I’d do differently: Take a short lake cruise — I missed it and regret that.
