Lucerne: Switzerland’s Most Charming Small City
A postcard-perfect destination with a lake, mountains, and historic wooden bridges
Lucerne feels like Switzerland distilled into one place. I arrived by train from Zurich (about 1 hour), stepping directly into a city that looks almost staged in its beauty. The centerpiece is the Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), a covered wooden bridge that crosses the river and serves as the city’s most recognizable landmark. Walking along the lakefront promenade gives you constant mountain views, and the city itself is easy to explore entirely on foot. One of the best experiences was taking a trip up Mount Pilatus. You can combine a boat ride, cogwheel train, and cable car into a full-day experience — one of the most scenic excursions in Switzerland. Food is similar to Zurich — high quality but expensive. Lakeside restaurants offer great views but come at a premium. What I’d do differently: Stay overnight — Lucerne is quieter and more atmospheric in the evening.
