Porto: Wine, River Views, and Old-World Charm
A compact Portuguese city known for port wine, steep streets, and beautiful riverfront views.
Porto feels more intimate than Lisbon, but just as rich in character. From Porto Airport (OPO), I took the metro into the city — simple and inexpensive. The historic Ribeira district along the Douro River is the highlight. Colorful buildings, narrow streets, and river views create one of the most photogenic settings in Europe. Crossing the Dom Luís I Bridge takes you into Vila Nova de Gaia, where the famous port wine cellars are located. I toured one and did a tasting — worth it even if you’re not a wine expert. Walking uphill through Porto reveals quieter neighborhoods and great viewpoints. Food is hearty — I tried the francesinha, a local sandwich that’s heavy but memorable. What I’d do differently: Wear better shoes — Porto is steep.
