Crete: Greece’s Most Complete Island
A large and diverse island combining beaches, history, and local culture
Crete feels more like a small country than an island. I flew into Heraklion Airport (HER) and rented a car immediately — this is essential here. The island is too large to rely on public transit alone. Highlights include: Knossos Palace (Minoan ruins) Chania Old Town (Venetian harbor) Elafonissi Beach (pink sand) Driving allows you to explore inland villages, which often feel more authentic than coastal resorts. Food was exceptional — fresh seafood, local wine, and simple grilled dishes. What I’d do differently: Spend more time in Chania instead of Heraklion.
