Blue Mountains Day Trip from Sydney: Cliffs, Forests, and the Three Sisters
A simple first‑time guide to visiting the Blue Mountains using public transport from Sydney.
Only two hours from Sydney, the Blue Mountains feel like another world. Tall eucalyptus forests stretch across deep valleys filled with blue haze — the effect that gives the region its name.
I took the early train from Sydney’s Central Station to Katoomba. The ride itself is scenic, climbing gradually into cooler mountain air.

The main viewpoint is Echo Point, where the famous Three Sisters rock formation stands dramatically above the valley. Seeing it for the first time, I understood why it’s one of Australia’s most photographed landscapes.
There are dozens of walking trails here, but the Prince Henry Cliff Walk is the best introduction. It follows the edge of the escarpment, linking several lookouts with sweeping valley views.
In the afternoon I rode the Scenic Railway, a steep rail line descending into the rainforest valley. Walking among towering tree ferns felt prehistoric.
Costs: Train tickets about $10–15 each way plus optional attraction passes.
Visa note: Australia requires ETA entry authorization for many visitors including Canadians and Americans.
Suggested photo: The Three Sisters rock pillars rising from the blue valley.
