Banff and Lake Louise: Canada’s Most Iconic Mountain Experience
A detailed guide to exploring Banff National Park, including lakes, drives, and logistics.
The Canadian Rockies feel expansive in a way that’s hard to describe until you’re there. Flying into Calgary International Airport (YYC), I rented a car and drove about 1.5 hours west to Banff. This is essential — public transport is limited, and the freedom to stop along the way adds to the experience. Banff town is compact and easy to walk, with restaurants, shops, and a strong mountain-town feel. The must-see sites include:
· Lake Louise (go early — parking fills quickly)

· Moraine Lake (even more dramatic, now shuttle access only)
· Icefields Parkway (one of the best drives in the world) Driving the Icefields Parkway toward Jasper was one of the highlights — glaciers, wildlife, and constant viewpoints. I also took the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain, which offers panoramic views over the valley. Food is solid but secondary to the setting — mountain lodge-style dining dominates. What I’d do differently: Stay longer — this is not a rushed destination.
