Quetico Canoe Experience

A true wilderness journey by water.

Days are defined by paddling and portaging. Campsites are remote and peaceful—this is immersive travel. My trip was probably on the long side of intense. It was 30 days long, with access from a plane into Thunder Bay. We were 12 people in a group and we brought in 15 days of supplies that we carried in our canoes and on our backpacks for the portages. At day 14 we made it to a park centre where our food supply for the next 15 days had been dropped off earlier. Unfortunately, the squirrels got into some of our fresh supply so we made sure to catch some extra fish to top up our proteins. The sites are phenomenal. The portages, sometimes 2 miles long, were exhausting but are remembered for ever. We liked coming into the beach and like a well oiled machine, jumped out, put the food packs on and canoes were put onto my back ( one canoe carried by one person), and then we started running down the track. If you were another group, using two person carrying techniques, our speed must have seemed impossible. We saw lots of wildlife and sometimes really appreciated camping on an island. As we went south we met many groups of US fishermen and canoe parties. It was a chance to say hi and meet like minded people. At night time, we fished, swam and read out precious book, that had been stuffed in our sleeping bag, and wrapped in a tarp for waterproofing in case we dumped the canoe, as we did several times. Quetico offers an experience for the overnighters or longer, Highly recommended.
