Munich: Beer Halls, Parks, and Bavarian Tradition
A balanced guide to Munich’s historic centre, green spaces, and iconic beer culture.
Flying into Munich Airport (MUC), I took the S-Bahn (S1/S8) into the city centre — about 40 minutes and very efficient. Taxis are comfortable but cost around €60. Munich is clean, organized, and easy to navigate. I stayed near Marienplatz, which is the central square and a good base for first-time visitors. Previous I had a car and stayed about 20 minutes by train from the core, both options work well. The Glockenspiel draws crowds, but the surrounding architecture is just as impressive. From there, it’s an easy walk to: Viktualienmarkt (food market) Frauenkirche Residenz Palace One of the best parts of Munich is its green space. I spent an afternoon in the English Garden, one of the largest urban parks in the world. Watching surfers on the Eisbach River is a unique experience. The Hofbräuhaus is touristy but still worth visiting once. For a more local beer garden experience, try smaller spots in the park. My kids remember the experience well! A great day trip is to Neuschwanstein Castle, about 2 hours away. What I’d do differently: Spend more time in local neighborhoods outside the centre.
