Amsterdam: Canals, Bikes, and Easy Living
A relaxed but culturally rich city perfect for walking and cycling exploration.
Arriving at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), I took the direct train into Amsterdam Centraal Station — about 15 minutes and extremely efficient. Amsterdam is best explored slowly. I rented a bike near Centraal Station and spent hours just following canals. The key areas to explore: Jordaan district (quiet, local feel) Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) for shops Museumplein (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum) The Anne Frank House is powerful but requires booking in advance. Food is casual but good. I stopped frequently for coffee and pastries, and had dinner along a canal — simple, relaxed, and scenic. A great day trip is Zaanse Schans, about 20 minutes by train — windmills and traditional Dutch houses. Another trip I took was the train north to Delft and then rented a bicycle for the day. If the Bicycle rental allows, its great to bike south back to Amsterdam. Stop at the local cheese, and vegetable markets, very tasty.
